This year’s Active Aging Week at Friendship Village of Dublin sparkled with energy, inspiration and unforgettable moments. Our Community Life and Wellness team went all out to create a week-long immersive experience that transported Residents to destinations across the globe – all without ever leaving campus. Each day offered a new “stop” on our Magic Carpet Ride, featuring cultural activities, performances and flavors from different regions.

Active Aging Week, celebrated annually since 2004, highlights the vibrant, positive aspects of aging. At Friendship Village, we embrace this mission by inspiring Residents to try new things, learn about different cultures and savor the joy of being part of an active, engaged community. Here’s a look back at the unforgettable adventures we shared.

Day 1: Mediterranean Magic

Olive oil tasting at Friendship Village of DublinOur journey began with a taste of the Mediterranean. After an exciting opening ceremony to kick off the week, Residents enjoyed a delightful olive oil-tasting session with Nick Gallo from Gallo’s Restaurants. They sampled premium oils and learned about the culinary traditions of the Mediterranean region.

In the afternoon, Steve Riska from Heidelberg Brewing led a Mediterranean wine tasting, bringing a taste of the sunny vineyards of Southern Europe right to our doorstep. Inspired by the region’s artistry, residents also got hands-on by creating Mediterranean-style ceramic tiles, adding a personal touch to their travels.

The day wrapped up with a screening of Mamma Mia!  Everyone relaxed, sang along and enjoyed the popular musical set in the Greek islands. It was a perfect ending to our first leg of the journey.

The day started with an energizing African dance class. We moved to the vibrant beats of traditional African rhythms — a joyful way to start the day.

In the afternoon, we welcomed Zuri Fashion for an enlightening discussion on sustainability and ethical fashion. Residents learned about how African artisans create beautiful, responsibly made clothing supporting local communities.

Chaplain Fred and guest speaker Dr. Ousman M. Kobo led a fascinating discussion on African religions, offering insights into the continent’s diverse spiritual traditions. Later, our friends from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium stopped by with some incredible wildlife, giving us a close-up look at the animals of Africa.

The day ended with a soulful African drum circle, where residents gathered outdoors to create rhythmic beats and enjoy the sense of unity and joy that music brings.
