Fall in Columbus, Ohio, is dominated by one thing: The Ohio State University Football. Scarlet and Gray, Block Os, and buckeye leaves are not just for Saturdays; they are décor for every day. While the colors on the trees change from green to orange, red and brown, the colors of Buckeye Football fans never run. They are forever Scarlet and Gray. At The Bailey at Bridge Park, that is no exception.
Even if you are not native to Ohio or Columbus, the Buckeye spirit is infectious. It’s about more than just football. Its men’s and women’s basketball teams are competitive and nationally ranked. OSU is adding to Columbus’s growing hockey culture and is the home to a perennial powerhouse and national champion women’s program. Ohio State Athletics has a plethora of national champion athletes and programs, and there is one team behind each of them. You know that team as “The Best Damn Band in the Land,” the Ohio State Marching Band.
For years, TBDBITL (for short) has delivered powerful, entertaining, and inspiring performances from the fields and the stands of different OSU athletic teams. Just like OSU athletes do with their team, the marching band members stay connected with the band. TBDBITL has its own alumni organization, not just to continue performing, but to connect with and support the student-musicians that make up one of the most popular performing groups in the country.
A Morning Full of Buckeye Spirit
On November 21, The Ohio State University Alumni Marching Band brought its show to The Bailey at Bridge Park to do all three: connect, support, and perform.
For those new to the area, Hyper Friday is an event created by The Ohio State University Alumni Marching Band designed to financially support the current student members of TBDBITL by performing at venues across Columbus for nearly 18 consecutive hours.
In partnership with Crawford Hoying Properties, Brick House Blue, and One Medical, The Bailey at Bridge Park was named stop number one for this year’s performance.
The crisp chill in the air hardly deterred those wielding instruments, pom poms, and batons. Our friends at Brick House Blue welcomed the alumni band to a round of coffee and hot chocolate plus a donut spread to fuel them through their morning session.
A brisk walk up the road through Bridge Park led the band to the Amenities Deck at The Bailey, our main outdoor meeting grounds, where more than 40 people were waiting to greet the band with their Buckeye gear and the giant digital screen delivering the O-H, I-O! cheer.
Once the band filed in, the drums started beating to the tune of Buckeye Battle Cry, elevating the crowd’s excitement to another level. Band members, cheerleaders, and baton twirlers, dating back to the Class of 1971, put on a show that included classic hits like Hang On Sloopy, Fight the Team Across the Field, and an a capella rendition of a song addressing the team from that state up north.
But at The Bailey, and in true Ohio State fashion, we don’t just spectate; we get in the game! The surprise of the morning was when the Amenities Deck turned into a miniature version of Ohio Stadium, and the band invited the growing crowd to join in a makeshift version of Script Ohio, a signature song and routine for Ohio State fans and band members alike. With open arms and school spirit bursting at the seams, the band welcomed everyone in attendance to march alongside as the music poured from their instruments. We are proud to say that there were zero collisions while making our own Block O!
Bring Your Energy to The Bailey
The excitement and energy experienced that morning were special in so many ways, but it is also exactly what makes The Bailey at Bridge Park unique.
