Flu Prevention 101

[Updated: November 7, 2018 | Published: November 7, 2018]

It’s the time of year everyone dreads — flu season. As you age, the side effects of the flu can be longer-lasting and more problematic, including the need for hospitalization and an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

You can protect yourself from the flu in five easy steps:

Get a flu shot

Recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the flu shot is one of the best weapons against the virus. Many pharmacies and doctors give out flu shots at discounted rates, so be sure to find the most affordable place for you to be vaccinated.

Wash your hands

To avoid the flu, it’s essential that you keep your hands clean. Wash your hands before eating and after you come in contact with others who are potentially sick. When washing your hands, rub your palms vigorously with soap for at least 20 seconds. Turn the faucet off using a towel to protect your clean hands.

Eat well

Vitamin C is a powerful immune booster found in colorful fruits and veggies, like oranges and spinach. By eating more vitamin C, you provide your body the power needed to fight germs.

Exercise

Daily exercise can strengthen your respiratory system to make you less susceptible to the flu. Friendship Village of Dublin has endless opportunities to help get your blood pumping — from state-of-the-art gym equipment to group fitness classes.

Rest

When you sleep, a protein is released that can help combat inflammation and illness. So, when you start to feel under the weather, try to get at least eight hours of sleep.

It’s important to act against the flu early so you can try to avoid serious complications. At Friendship Village of Dublin, we pride ourselves on being able to provide unique amenities that keep residents happy and healthy!
