FVD Mission Moment: Order Dinner from Anywhere. Even the Bus.

Resident Sandy W. in the Legacy Dining Room at Friendship Village of Dublin.

Sandy W. was heading back to Friendship Village of Dublin from a community field trip when she realized she would be late returning to the Village. She had a busy night ahead and didn’t want to spend precious time sitting down in the Legacy Dining Room or waiting to order and pick up food.

A culinary department team member hands Resident Sandy W. a meal she ordered through the online ordering system at Friendship Village of Dublin.

That night, she was craving a filet. So she pulled out her phone, opened the Resident app, and ordered her dinner right from her seat on the bus. By the time she walked through the door and made her way to The Legacy dining space, her meal was ready and waiting with one of our friendly hosts at the welcome stand.

Innovation in the Kitchen

To further customize dining for our Residents, we recently launched online ordering at The Legacy.

Sandy was among the first Residents to try it. A self-described “geek” with a professional background in technology as a manager of coders, she volunteered for the online meal ordering project.

“That’s what I did in my career,” she explains. “I’m used to trying different things, and I’m not afraid to try them”.

As an unofficial quality control expert, she helped refine the system into the seamless process it is today:

  • Browse: View the full menu on your phone or tablet via the Resident app.
  • Schedule: Pick a 15-minute pickup window that fits your day.
  • Order: Place the order from your apartment, a meeting, or a bus heading home.
  • Pay: The system bills your Resident account automatically—no cards or room numbers required.

Small Changes, Big Impact

Sandy stays busy. She volunteers as a docent at the Columbus Zoo and keeps a packed social calendar. Like some Residents, she usually eats dinner in her apartment with her husband. The new system didn’t change her life; it just removed a small bit of friction.

She also discovered a surprise benefit in personalization. When she browses the menu at her own pace, she notices options she used to miss. The app allows her to navigate categories like “Light Offerings” to find exactly what she wants. When ordering her filet, for instance, the screen prompts her for every detail: What temperature do you want? What sides? What sauce?

“I forget that we have sauces,” Sandy says. The app even helps her remember specific preferences, like choosing a type of cheese or skipping the onions on a burger.

“When you stand at a counter with a line behind you, you order what you know,” Sandy says. “When you sit in your apartment at noon, you have time to explore. Nobody’s in a hurry”.

A cheeseburger is one of the items Residents can order online from the Legacy Dining Room at Friendship Village of Dublin.

The Legacy, Your Way

Residents enjoy The Legacy Dining Room at Friendship Village of Dublin. For Residents who love the full dining experience, nothing changes. The Legacy remains the same social hub it has always been. You can still grab your favorite table, order whatever tempts your appetite, and catch up with friends.

Our goal is to help each Resident enjoy life on their own terms. Online ordering is just one piece of our broader commitment to innovation. Our Culinary Team plans to expand this system to other dining venues, like the Bistro and Cafe, within the next year. Delivery and more personalized dietary options are also on the way.

It’s one example of how Friendship Village continues to adapt to the pace of our Residents’ lives. Days are full. Schedules change. Sometimes you just don’t feel like dealing with the hubbub of communal dining.  Improvements like this make it easier to keep everything moving.

Thanks to the forward-thinking efforts of our Culinary Team, waiting for a favorite meal is no longer on the menu for Residents like Sandy. Or for anyone who wants to order online because of sickness, for convenience, or because the next season of Bridgerton just dropped, and you have a calming night of Netflix and relaxation planned in your own home.
