For retired adults looking to showcase their creativity, gardening and landscaping poses a perfect activity to get outside and create beautiful masterpieces.
Just ask Andy Howland, an artist who uses gardening and landscape as a way to express his creative mind.
“I’ve been an artist from the time I was able to hold the chalk and draw on the driveway,” said Howland, landscape manager at Friendship Village of Dublin. “My interest in art drives my motivation for whatever I do, whether it be landscaping or anything around the community.”
As landscape manager, Howland aims his focus on creating attractive aesthetics for the exterior property. From snow removal in the cold, winter months to numerous outdoor projects when the weather heats up, Howland performs a wide range of tasks.
Along with these duties, Howland also serves as a counselor for residents interested in gardening, helping to prepare and maintain the community gardens with a resident committee who oversee its operations. With a number of accessible, raised plots around campus, residents are able to use their green thumbs at their own convenience.
“Residents are able to garden whenever they want and can choose whatever plants they’d like; however, everyone loves planting tomatoes,” Howland said with a smile.
An advocate for education, community and the nine dimensions of wellness expressed at Friendship Village, Howland recognizes the value and social connection the gardens bring to senior citizens.
“These projects drive the community to get out and see things,” said Howland. “I’ve met many residents who are encouraged to get outside just through the beautiful landscaping and views around our community.”
With aspirations to provide increased education, activities and interactions with gardeners in central Ohio, Howland hopes that gardening and landscaping, or merely the views, become an inspiration and interest to all residents.
“Those who only touch plants with a fork or shoe still enjoy beautiful, changing views,” said Howland. “I want to encourage this community as a location of interest for all to come and see.”
