At Friendship Village of Dublin, our residents’ health and well-being is our top priority. That’s why we created The Village Way Wellness Program.
The wellness program takes a whole-person, community-wide approach to health. As part of this program, we have identified nine dimensions of wellness including: physical, nutritional, social, emotional, spiritual, environmental, vocational, intellectual and health services.
To help educate our community, we’ve put together a list of our 5 favorite healthy aging tips with help from Berkeley Wellness. We hope you’ll agree that these five tips are all part of our way of life at Friendship Village of Dublin!
1. Eat a nutritious, mostly plant-based diet
We’ve all heard this advice before, but eating foods packed with vitamins, minerals and fiber can have a variety of benefits for your body! In addition to plant-based foods, be sure to pay attention to fiber to reduce other health risks, such as diabetes and strokes.
2. Manage your medications
This is especially important as we age and start taking more medications. It’s important to keep your medications properly stored, not miss any doses and be aware of possible side affects. Medication mismanagement is one of the number one causes of hospitalizations in older adults, which is why is even more crucial to stay on top of it!
3. Have regular social contact
Maintaining relationships with friends and family not only adds to the quality of your life, but it can also add years to your life. Social relationships can help us handle stress by providing emotional support.
4. Exercise for muscle strength
In addition to light cardio, muscle strength exercise plays a huge role in healthy aging. Muscle strength can reduce the risk of cognitive decline, diabetes and osteoporosis.
5. Learn new things
Engaging in new, challenging activities helps improve cognitive functioning as we age. It’s important to go beyond familiar activities to really challenge yourself!
Try adding some of these items to your daily routine to help with the aging process! Are there any other tips you would add? We’d love to hear in the comments.
