Summer is the season to enjoy the beautiful weather by spending time outside. However, it’s important to take proper precautions to prevent illness and injury from the scorching summer sun.
Follow these tips to beat the heat and stay safe this summer:
Stay Cool
Limit the amount of time spent in the sun or outside during the peak hours of the day because too much sun exposure can translate to heat-related injuries or illnesses. It’s easy to misjudge the amount of time your body can be exposed to the sun. This means it’s important to be aware of the signs of exposure to excessive heat.
Stay Hydrated
Hydration is important year round but especially during warmer months when high temperatures can cause rapid dehydration. Focus on drinking water and avoid substances that dehydrate the body — like salty foods and sugary drinks. It’s recommended to drink at least eight glasses of water per day.
Stay Covered
When exposed to the sun, apply sunscreen at least every two hours. In addition to applying sunscreen, be sure to wear a hat to protect your face and neck from high index UV-rays. These rays can cause severe damage to the skin -— putting you at risk for skin cancer.
Stay Informed
Following these simple steps will help protect your body from the summer sun. Even while taking precautions, it is important to pay attention to possible signs of heat exhaustion. Stay on the lookout for local weather alerts indicating extreme heat and avoid the outside during these advisories.
Most importantly, play it safe and listen to your body!
