Now, a growing body of empirical research supports these claims. According to the most recent study, conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago, older adults in senior communities have a longer lifespan, receive more healthcare services and benefit from better rehabilitative and preventive care than those living in other settings.

“This research builds a holistic picture of longevity for older adults who recently moved into senior housing communities,” said Dianne Munevar, vice president of health care strategy at NORC, in a press release announcing research findings. “Longevity is not only adding years to life, but also adding life to years.”

NORC researchers also looked at variations across different types of senior housing communities, including continuing care retirement communities like Friendship Village of Dublin, independent living communities, assisted living communities, and memory care communities. They found that Residents reaped the most benefits in higher-quality communities

  • Residents in the top 25 percent of communities live 70 days longer than those in the bottom 25 percent of communities. 
  • CCRC residents live almost two weeks longer than older adults in the community at large. 
  • Senior housing residents in the top 25 percent of communities receive more than 40 additional days of home health care than their peers in the bottom 25 percent of communities.

Five Healthy Lifestyle Habits that Increase Longevity

Leading a less-healthy lifestyle can increase your chances of developing such diseases, which in turn can result in premature death.

But does a healthier lifestyle lead to longer life? Recent research suggests the answer is yes!  In a largest-scale study, scientists from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health collected data on five different low-risk lifestyle factors and compared health outcomes for those who adopted all five with those who didn’t adopt any.  These factors included:

This included getting the daily recommended amounts of vegetables, fruit, nuts, whole grains, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and omega-3 fatty acids and limiting consumption of red and processed meats, beverages with added sugar, trans fat, and sodium.
  2. Not smoking.
  3. Getting at least 3.5 hours of moderate to vigorous physical activity each week.
  4. Drinking only moderate amounts of alcohol (one drink or less per day for women or two drinks or less per day for men).
  5. Maintaining a normal weight (body mass index between 18.5 and 24.9).

At age 50, women who did not adopt any of the five healthy habits lived until they were around 79 years old, and men until 75.5 years old.

Those who practiced all five healthy habits lived up to 14 years longer. Men lived up to 87.6 years, and women up to 93.1. The study also found that, when practiced independently, each of the five healthy habits decreased the risk of death, cancer, and heart disease.
